Care Instructions
Stained glass is a beautiful and delicate art form, and with proper care, it can last for generations. Here are some tips on how to care for your stained glass pieces:
Regular Cleaning:
- Dusting: Dust your stained glass regularly with a soft, dry cloth, feather duster, or microfiber towel. This will prevent the buildup of dust and dirt, which can dull the appearance of the glass.
- Washing: If your stained glass needs more than just dusting, you can wash it with a mild dish soap and water (I recommended just water)
- Use a soft cloth or sponge, and avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbers, which can scratch the glass or damage the solder.
- Rinse the piece thoroughly with clean water and dry it immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.
Additional Care:
- Avoid harsh chemicals: Do not use window cleaners, ammonia, vinegar, or other harsh chemicals on your stained glass, as these can damage the solder, lead, and patina.
- If your piece is mde using the Tiffany Copper Foil Method, protect from the elements: If your stained glass is exposed to direct sunlight, rain, or extreme temperatures, it may fade or become damaged over time. I have used a wax to help protect each piece, however I cannot guarantee the longevity if placed in harsh environments
- Handle with care: Stained glass is fragile and can be easily broken. When handling your stained glass, be sure to support it from the bottom and avoid putting pressure on the glass or solder lines
Storage: If you need to store your stained glass, wrap it carefully in a soft cloth or bubble wrap and store it in a safe, dry place.
Dealing with Oxidation:
- Over time, the lead or solder in your stained glass may oxidize, causing a white or cloudy appearance.
- You can gently remove this oxidation with a soft cloth or a q-tip dipped in a mild solution of water and dish soap.
- You can also use a commercial lead cleaner or a paste made from baking soda and water.
- After cleaning, you can apply a thin coat of carnauba wax (any car wax with Carabauba works well) to the metal to help protect it from further oxidation.
